Dawg Plays Big Mon - Happy Birthday Bill Monroe
On a Sunday morning in 1961, Ralph Rinzler invited 16-year
old David Grisman to hear Bill Monroe
and his Blue Grass Boys play at New River Ranch in Rising Sun, Maryland.
That experience changed David's life and profoundly affected the musical
journey he would take for the next half-century.
Now in celebration of Big Mon's 100th birthday, the Dawg has assembled
an amazing collection of musical ėMonroebilliaî featuring some of Bill's
greatest compositions and two original tributes featuring David with Red
Allen, Ray Brown, Jethro Burns, Vassar Clements, Jerry Garcia, John Hartford,
Tony Rice, Mike Seeger, Doc Watson and others. Ten tracks are
previously unissued live and studio performances, including an 11-minute
interview of Bill Monroe by Ralph Rinzler which David recorded in 1965.
