Stephane Grappelli & David Grisman
— The First Session
On October 7, 1978 mandolinist David Grisman
and legendary violinist Stephane Grappelli met at 1750 Arch Street
Studios in Berkeley, California to record several tunes for David's third
solo recording project. Accompanying them were guitarist Tony Rice
and mandolinist Mike Marshall, both members of the David
Grisman Quintet, and the celebrated jazz bassist Eddie Gomez.
Three pieces were recorded that day, two Grisman
originals, "Dawg Patch" and "16/16" and a new arrangement of the Reinhardt-Grappelli
classic, "Minor Swing." This collection includes all the previously unreleased
takes from this historic session. The playing was inspired and this unique
musical friendship would continue until Stephane's death in 1997.
